Gardner Minshew’s magic ran out in awful 4th quarter vs. Texans

By: |

The worst game Gardner Minshew’s NFL career couldn’t have come at a worse time. The quarterback, who has a tendency toward slow starts and magical finishes, did not continue his streak of clutch play.

In London against the Houston Texans on Sunday in Week 9, the rookie quarterback had four turnovers (two interceptions, two fumbles) in the fourth quarter, including three turnovers on consecutive offensive plays. The Jaguars lost, 26-3. The rough performance coincides with the likely return of Nick Foles, who started the season on injured reserve and thrust Minshew, an unlikely star, into the spotlight. Coach Doug Marrone has stalled when asked about who will start at quarterback. Unfortunately, Minshew’s poor play may have decided it. He finished with 27 completions on 47 attempts for 309 yards and the four turnovers.

The Jaguars (4-4) badly needed a win on Sunday to get in the mix in the AFC South playoff hunt, with the Texans (6-3) and Indianapolis Colts (5-2) above Jacksonville in the standings. Though they only trailed, 9-3, at halftime, Minshew and the Jaguars struggled. The loss decreases their playoff chances as they likely turn to Foles, who signed a four-year, $88 million deal with the Jaguars this offseason.

But before we get too negative about a truly thrilling ascent of a 2019 sixth-round pick (with a glorious mustache), let’s enjoy some his highlights. He had a sensational touchdown pass against the Denver Broncos in September. He met fashion icon, “Uncle Rico,” who seems to have inspired most of Minshew’s game day outfits. Minshew’s pre-game rituals are also a thing of legend. And though he couldn’t pull off a win over the Texans, Minshew was just what the Jaguars needed to that point.

Maybe there were signs that Minshew was unlikely to retain the job (which For The Win’s Steven Ruiz detailed in great depth). But Minshew was probably the most entertaining surprise in the NFL in 2019.

When the fourth quarter turned sour for Minshew, fans and media members weighed in on his performance and his future with Jacksonville.
