Dominic Thiem upset World No. 1 and top-seeded Rafael Nadal in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open on Wednesday in four sets.
Nadal won two Grand Slam titles last year, including the U.S. Open in September, to add to his career total of 19. But Nadal has only won one Australian Open (2009).
Austria’s Thiem, the fifth seed in the tournament and World No. 5, won the first two sets in tiebreakers (7-6, 7-6) before Nadal began to mount a comeback with a 6-4 third set. Then in the fourth set Thiem recovered and fended off Nadal to claim the match. He won 7-6, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.
Thiem faltered on several match points in the fourth set and struggled to put Nadal away before finally prevailing. The match lasted four hours and 10 minutes.
Thiem will meet Alexander Zverev in Thursday’s semifinal clash. On the other side of the Australian Open bracket, No. 2 Djokovic and No. 3 Roger Federer face off for a chance to play for the title. Djokovic won last year’s Australian Open.
