Daylight saving time 2019 ends Sunday

Daylight saving time ends on Sunday at 2 a.m. — which is the official hour to set all of our clocks back to standard time. But most of us will probably “fall back” before we go to bed Saturday night. That’s unless you live in the states of Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) or Hawaii. Or the U.S. territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, which also do not observe daylight saving time. To clear the record, the time change was never about the farmers.

Crews battle last stubborn Southern California wildfire

Firefighters will work to battle against the last remaining large wildfire in Southern California this weekend.  The Maria Fire, which burned near the farming community of Santa Paula in Ventura County, prompted evacuation orders for nearly 11,000 people, according to the Associated Press. The relatively minor housing losses — the Maria Fire destroyed at least three homes — come in contrast to hundreds that perished in past fires. One of the major reasons? Officials say Southern California was prepared for the round of big winds.  Red flag weather warnings of extreme fire danger had been expected to expire Friday evening but forecasters extended them to 6 p.m. Saturday for valleys and interior mountains of Ventura and Los Angeles counties, citing the withering conditions.

Awkward timing: Stephen Strasburg’s opt-out deadline is right before World Series parade

If World Series MVP Stephen Strasburg opts out of his contract, as he is expected to, it will be have to be by noon Saturday — two hours before the Washington Nationals’ championship parade kicks off in the nation’s capital, according to The deadline was set more than three years ago when Strasburg’s contract extension was negotiated. Given the uniqueness of the situation, it’s entirely likely the two sides agree to push back the deadline, says. Strasburg is owed $100 million over the final four years of his deal, as part of the seven-year, $175 million pact he signed in 2016. He can also opt out after the 2020 season.

Prince Harry heads to Japan for first official visit

Prince Harry is set to visit Japan on Saturday for the 2019 Rugby World Cup Final between England and South Africa. This will be Duke of Sussex’s first official visit to the country. Harry’s visit will include more than just watching the game, however. Upon arrival, he will visit a purpose-built para-sports training center and will spend the afternoon with Japanese Paralympic hopefuls. He is scheduled to return to England on Sunday.

Popeyes’ chicken sandwich is back for National Sandwich Day

Sunday is National Sandwich Day, which is delicious enough on its own — and it’s also the day that Popeyes is bringing back its so-popular-it-sold-out chicken sandwich.  Almost immediately after Popeyes started selling the sandwich in August, reports started circulating that the New Orleans-style fried chicken on a bun was selling out at some locations and leading to long waits. Then, a week after the launch, Popeyes started a viral Twitter feud with Chick-fil-A and other restaurants, and the battle lines were drawn over which chicken chain had the better sandwich. What else is significant about the timing of Popeyes’ re-launch this weekend? Sunday is also a day Chick-fil-A is closed, which it apparently forgot when it promoted National Sandwich Day. That’s one more point for Popeyes.
